As part of reducing the dominance of spruce and restoring natural processes the young spruce at the east end of the Gillerthwaite fields is being felled. The trees were planed on a mire which is a UK BAP habitat. Removing the trees will allow the mire to develop more naturally and Will ensure the valley bottom develops more open habitats which will allow grazing cattle to roam more freely in the future.
