From young birch being planted at Crag to established birch woodland. This photo from Broadmoor shows 15 year old birch woodland growing where once there was a Sitka spruce plantation. The conifer stumps have become home to a rich variety of mosses, lichens and liverworts. Over another 15 years we hope that even more of Broadmoor and Crag will become birch and willow woodland like this. Th birch shown here has developed from natural regeneration, a natural process now recognised by Wild Ennerdale but being accepted 10 years before Wild Ennerdale was formed. This demonstrates that Wild Ennerdale whilst often thought of as being radical and new the Partnership is as much about recognising and celebrating what has already been developing the valley for some years.
